Linen Bread Bags
Did you know your bread keeps better in a 100% linen fabric bag? Better than if left in a plastic or paper bag. For the best results, the fabric needs to be 100% linen. This would be even better if the linen fabric is also organic, undyed, or upcycled. However, any 100% linen will be fine of a reasonable weight.
The French have kept their bread this way for a long time. Linen fabric is breathable; it doesn’t rot or go mouldy. It keeps the bread fresh for longer, so there is less waste. Take your linen bags to your local baker and have them put the bread straight into your bread bag, saving on plastic or paper bags.
Cotton Bread Bags
I have seen bread bags made from 100% cotton, which is better than plastic but nowhere near as good as linen for keeping your bread fresh. Cotton is not as eco-friendly as linen. Cotton uses more water in its processing. Linen grows on poor soil and doesn’t need chemicals in its processing method, unlike cotton. As we know, linen is more expensive than cotton, but it will last much longer.
These would make ideal gifts that could be embroidered to personalize them. I love pure linen 🙂
DIY or Buy
Buy – If you don’t want to make your own, I have seen them on Folksy’s handmade site in Britain.
DIY – Super easy linen bread bag to make in any size you wish in 100% linen fabric. Measure your bread and make the bag a little bigger. You can buy 100% linen fabric, or you may have 100% linen clothing items or old table cloth you could upcycle. You will need more than one as they will need regular washing in natural laundry detergent, with your regular wash. Then stretch back into shape and dry naturally.
